How to Use the SOAP Bible Study Method for Prayer and Reflection
A beginner-friendly guide to the SOAP Bible study method: Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer.
What is the SOAP method?
SOAP is a simple Bible study framework built around Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. It encourages you to move from reading a passage to reflecting on it, considering how it applies to your life, and responding in prayer.
Scripture: choose a manageable passage
Select a short Bible passage rather than trying to cover too much at once. Write down a verse or section that stands out. Writing the text reference helps you return to it later without relying on memory.
Observation: notice what the passage says
Ask who is speaking, what is happening, what words or ideas repeat, and what the passage reveals about God, people, choices, or consequences. Keep observations connected to the actual text.
Application: consider your response
Ask what the passage may call you to believe, practice, change, remember, or discuss. A useful application is specific enough to act on. For example, instead of “be better,” identify one conversation, habit, or decision where you can respond differently.
Prayer: respond to God
Turn your reflection into prayer. Thank God for what you learned, confess where you need help, ask for wisdom, and pray for others. A SOAP journal gives you a consistent place to keep the four steps together.
